THE LONG AWAITED INTERVIEW!!!

I'm sure you wonder, I know I do...what the heck is my crew thinking while I'm training, preparing to race, racing and recovering from racing. It is no secret...I'm no spring chicken. I started my "1/2 marathon in every state" quest on my 51st birthday, who does that? But, more over, who goes along with it for 31 states and counting? If you've been following the blog, you know it is my husband, Brian. Now, Brian, in his own right, was an accomplished athlete. He played basketball throughout his high school and college years. Ok, let's be honest, he did more than play basketball. He played center for the team in his home town who won the state championship in the Minnesota in 1977. He also was crowned Mr. Basketball in the state of Minnesota, 1977. He went on to play for the University of Minnesota with players whose names you would know. So, yeah, he played...and I wonder, what keeps him going while I'm racing...Here is the Q & A!!!

INTERVIEW OF THE CREW - OK, THE CREW OF ONE, MY HUSBAND, BRIAN!!!

Q: WHAT DO YOU GET OUT OF THE RACE?

A: The privilege of coaching and supporting my best friend into a becoming an accomplished runner.

Q: HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A RACE?

A: First, Ground work: check the race specs – surface, terrain, altitude.

Then, move on to the surrounding area in relation to the start of the race, distance from the hotel to start and (more importantly) distance from the end of the race to the hotel.

Finally, to THE most important aspect, locate the nearest Starbucks for after the race caffeine (I can’t tell you how important this is)...

Oh, and charge the Go-Pro.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE RACE?

A: The excitement of the final prep routine before the race followed closely with the anticipation of watching her cross the finish line.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PART OF THE RACE?

A: I usually get to the finish line well ahead of her so I’m able to watch some of the other racers cross the finish line. For some runners this is not their best time of the race. Some don’t make it across both timing pads before collapsing and crawling off, some needing assistance.

Q: WHY DID YOU EVER AGREE TO GO A LONG WITH THE QUEST?

A: When she proposed this quest I thought, 'how long will this really last'. She’s always had problems with her knees during runs before. But, after she ran the first few races without problems I thought, this is now possible and a great way to spend more time together and lots of mini vacations.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE RACE FOR YOU?

A: That’s hard, most race locations are spectacular. We’ve had the privilege of having friends and relatives meet us at several races. One that stands out would have to be Nevada. She ran in the Red Rocks Canyon just outside of Las Vegas. With the race starting just before dawn we were able to watch the sun light up the canyon walls.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST FORGETTABLE RACE FOR YOU?

A: Have to be Ohio...with the air temp before race at 19'F, wind 15-20 mph, light snow, no warming hut for after the race. This being one of the earlier races, we had not prepared properly for the conditions.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR RACER TO DO DIFFERENTLY IN RACES?

A: Relax and have more fun before and during. We are not training for the Olympics this truly is a participation sport. We are not trying to improve her times but she is always apologetic when she comes in later than she thought.

Q: DO YOU HAVE A RACE THAT YOU ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO?

A: Simply put, the next one. It doesn’t matter what state, or location she’s running, it’s a great time for us. And as we discovered a long time ago, every location has a story.

Q: IT IS NO SECRET THAT YOUR RACER THINKS YOU ARE THE BEST TEAM, WHAT KEEPS YOU FOCUSED AS HER TEAM?

A: This is a "both of us" quest not a "she" quest. This is a quest to bring us together, to have fun, to enjoy what God has given us. She’s my best friend, my mate, my wife.

Q: DO YOU EVER WISH YOU WERE RACING TOO?

A: The brain says yes the body says no.

Well...I think we can all utter a collective, Awwwwww!!! The truth be told, he really is this sweet! What a lucky girl I am!!! Run Happy Everyone :-)
